Ryan has other problems than this recent murder. He earned his honorable discharge but the past and survivor’s guilt is still with him. He has that anger thing under control, but he’s become detached, used to seeing things only in black and white, so what’s helping him with his investigation. And more important why is his apartment no longer as lonely?
Together they work on the case and learn about one another, and what they can accomplish together, in ways neither had ever dreamed.
Excerpt
Ryan, whoever he was, stepped closer. "Beautiful woman. I didn't see any sign of assault at the scene. Witness said he saw her go down and called an ambulance immediately. He wondered if it might be a heart attack."
Heart attack? She had no heart problems. No something else had happened to her, been done to her and she had to get to the bottom it. If she was dead, why did it feel like her heart was hammering in her chest?
"Don't know yet. I'm not going to speculate." Collins glared up at the younger doctor or orderly or whatever as he opened his mouth to respond. "You gonna stay?" This was directed at Ryan.
"I'd rather not."
The younger man chuckled and both Ryan and the older man must have glared at him, as it cut off abruptly.
Wait a minute, beautiful? He thought she was beautiful?
He turned then and she caught her breath. Beautiful was the word. Damn, the man hit gorgeous out of the park. He certainly hadn't been living here when she had. What was he, police? That would make sense. He obviously worked out and even in his off the rack suit his body was displayed to best advantage.
Just the way she liked them, tall with broad shoulders, tapering down to a waist and tight butt. His hair was a little on the long side, and messy like he'd gotten out of the shower and hadn't bothered to dry it. Hurrying over to check on her maybe? Or he'd gotten out of some woman's bed and thrown back on yesterday's clothes because he got a call.
Shit, the second scenario would probably be the one. But it didn't make him any less attractive. His eyes were dark brown, almost black and intense. She had the impression if someone had killed her; they needed to watch their back.
She watched the older doctor begin a preliminary investigation of her nude body and decided she didn't need to be here either. She hurried to get outside with Ryan before the door swung shut.
She had to hurry to catch up with his long legs. He muttered to himself and apparently decided to go back to the place where her body had been found. Good idea, she'd tag along. It was better than sitting around here.
He hadn't seemed to notice a chill with her close by. Of course he wore the suit coat and the nurses had been in short sleeves. Gail didn't care either way. It would get her out of here for a little while. Too bad they couldn't discuss the situation.
