Prologue
Bluff Dale, MO
“Mika!” Shouted her mother.
Mika just giggled softly while hiding in the bushes. She looked at her mother searching for her. They where playing a game of hide and seek. She was hiding in the brush near the highway. She wasn’t supposed to be that close to the highway but she knew that her mother would never look for her there. She had planned to sneak back to a place that her mother had already checked in order to trick her. Mika thought for a moment how beautiful her mother was with her flowing dark brown hair and her green eyes. She seemed to shimmer in the sun. It reminded her of an angel. She hoped that someday she would be half as beautiful as her mother.
“Mika!” Mika’s mom was starting to get worried. She had looked in all the normal hiding places and still no sign of her and it was starting to get dark out. “Mika! It’s time to come in honey it’s getting dark out.”
Neither of them noticed a black car that pulled to a stop near where Mika was hiding.
Mika was just about to call it quits and go in. Besides she was starting to get hungry and she knew her mother would have yummy cookies for her to eat. She stood up and could see her mommy still looking for her in the other direction.
“Mommy, I’m over here.” She begins giggling.
Mika’s mom had a look of relief. “Honey, you know you’re not supposed to be over there.” Suddenly the look on her face switched to a look of panic as horror traced her voice. “MIKA!”
Mika knew it was wrong for her to be near the highway but she never thought that her mother would get that upset. She started to take a step forward when somebody grabbed her from behind and threw her in the back seat of the car. “MOMMYYYY!!!!” Cried Mika. The sound was cut off as the car door was slammed shut and the car sped off. Mika looked out the back of the car window. She could see her mother running after the car trying to catch up to it. Then she saw her mother stumble and fall to the ground crying.
Mika screamed louder, “MOMMY, No I want my MOMMY!!!!” She sunk into the seat and brought her knees up to her chin crying.
After a time in the black of the night she could no longer see the surrounding out of the windows and she had given up. She was still crying but it was silent now. Eventually exhaustion took its toll and slumber settled over her like a shroud.
